Red Ribbon Bakeshop

It's been 3 months since Red Ribbon opened its first New York branch on Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, a mere two blocks away from Jollibee. This being a gorgeous spring weekend, a friend and I decided to check out this popular Filipino food chain for the first time and see if this temple of tempting carbohydrates still live up to what we've enjoyed back in the Philippines. However, the bakeshop was still packed with Pinoys, many queueing for their orders while all the tables were occupied. Business is apparently doing good.

Ensaimada

oh my goodness!

Sensing it might take awhile for us to get a table (and hopefully sample their Arroz Caldo and Palabok), we end up grabbing a basket and headed for the shelves to buy Ensaimada ($1.79 each) and Mamon ($1.39 each). We also got the a 6" Mango Cake ($16.99) and the 8" Cake Sampler ($20.99). With all these stuff now in our hands, we have no choice but to shorten our day out and head straight home - and eat it (not all of it of course!). After having walked a good part of the day earlier, at least I'm not so guilty about carbo-loading.

pastries to bring home

Was it good? Well, I did close my eyes while eating Mamon and the fluffiness of this French sponge cake brought me back to Manila in an instant. So corny, no? The Mango cake was very moist and light but I find the frosting a bit too much to my liking. I still have to try the Ensaimada and the cake sampler - they'll be in the fridge for now . . . away from my prying hands. As for the restaurant, I wished they had bigger space. They can't even properly store their crates of baked goods, at least not where customers can actually bump into them. But we'll definitely go back and hopefully find an empty table next time.

  4. As you said, OH MY GOD! They look so delicious! I just love it... not even hold them in my hands yet. :) What is that Ensaimada? I haven't tried it before and we couldn't find any Red Ribbon branch in Malaysia. Too bad. Are they worldwide food chain?

Ensaimada is a kind of brioche topped with grated cheese and quite popular with Filipinos. It's one of my favorite pastries. Red Ribbon is a bakeshop originating from the Philippines and has several branches in the USA, mostly in the west coast.

Oh, you were in the city. Jollibee's been around since last year. I do hope more Pinoy franchises would open up here.

The photo doesn't really give it justice as far as texture is concerned - the cake was really moist. Unfortunately, the cake was never free - yet I'm doing Red Ribbon a favor now, right?
