Flying Food (Part 1)

American Airlines

Over the years of flying several airlines, particularly those belonging to the Oneworld Alliance, I've taken photos, lots of digital photos, of meals served to me 36,000 feet up in the sky. Even before I get to eat, I discreetly focus my camera on what's in front of me (while my seatmate's eyes probably roll in disbelief hahaha!). Some were good, some were bad.

Beginning this series, I will be posting photos of my meals taken in Economy Class and on those occasions I redeemed a Business Class seat out of my FF miles. Back in 2004, when I flew on American Airlines B757 from Seattle, I took the photo above of what is probably one of the last free meals served in Economy Class: pasta with meat sauce, a very limp salad, diet Coke and a small cake for dessert. Rating? A 2 stars out of 5.

  1. Very nice start to a series. I don't put too much stock on airline food. AFter all it is airline food. Good or not I eat it. I'm not picky when it comes to what I put in my mouth at 30,000 feet :D

I hope by the end of the series you would rate which airline you think serves a decent meal.

  3. now i regret the times I got lazy taking photos of the foods on the plane. Some are actually nice. The best I've eaten so far was the one from Thai Airways years ago. Really interesting post you got here.. :)

  5. Nice! You must be familiar with a site called Airlinemeals.net (?), they have a database of airline food, unfortunately, I think they have server problems and so it hasn't been updated recently.

Personally, I think it was my experience with Qatar Airways and their catering which impressed me the most. However, speaking of real silverware, I only had those when I flew on Olympic Airways. And speaking of American Airlines, I had food poisoning from them flying from Quito to Miami. But hey, things are good otherwise.

I might just do that, thanks. And based on your your suggestion, I tweaked the above entry to include ratings of the meals.

As a foodie, I know this is the kind of post that will excite you. I'll be posting only a selection of the photos I have in my hard drive but I'm hoping you'll like the coming entries.

That is actually what's playing on my mind when I initially hesitated taking photos - I always tell myself I'll never see this meal again!

Hahaha! I kind of expected that reaction but in case my seatmate would ask why I'm taking photos, I would just say "this is for a project I'm doing".

Oh yes, I've visited that website years ago but I did notice no recent updates there - I thought the site's administrator simply abandoned it. Post 9/11, American Airlines has not used anything more than plastic for cutlery - makes the food look like a take out no? I wonder if you complained to AA re your food poisoning.

I wish Micki but I don't travel in First Class - what's considered Business class on most airlines is called First in American Airlines domestic flights. I travel in Economy but has been able to upgrade and redeem Business class tickets using my frequent flier miles.

  14. You can't make me drool with airline food... it is just disgusting... :-0
I already thought of taking my own food on board... but with the tight security they might think I am hiding a bomb in my sandwich... :-0
As I said already... I like travelling but I hate planes... it is no fun anymore...

  15. wow that looks like above average plane food but then i realized it was business/first class! i've only got to experience this once in my life for a shorter flight but it was a lot of fun getting that extra pampering. i do remember the food being better too...

i flew continental and then malaysian airlines for my most recent trip(s)
