A Dress To Impress

A PARADE OF SARIS ON A TEMPLE IN KHAJURAHO

Of all things Indian, nothing is more obvious than the sari. Women all over India wear them at home, at work, at weddings, or even when they're out of their country. I've seen Indian women in frigid New York wearing saris beneath their coats or Indian expats living in humid Manila draped in midriff-showing saris. It impresses me how Indian women are mightily proud of wearing them no matter how other women in other parts of the world are attached to Western clothing.

A sari is a long strip of unstitched cloth, usually 6 meters long. There are variations in the style of draping. Wealthy women wear saris using the finest silk glittering with embellishments while female villagers wear coarsely woven cotton usually with block-printing or tie-dyeing. Whatever the social class, wearing a sari is what defines Indian womanhood.

I still have to see a Pinay wearing a terno riding on a scooter like that. But then, is the terno still alive since the last time Imelda Marcos wore it? I bet even Gloria Arroyo doesn't wear it.

  5. Hi Jen,
The explosion of such colors really made the trip all the more memorable.
I'm so envious that majority of Indians are able to maintain their cultural identity.
